What Is Form 1099-DA?

The IRS form digital asset brokers send for crypto sales. Tax year 2025 is the first year it exists.

Form 1099-DA, "Digital Asset Proceeds From Broker Transactions," is the crypto counterpart of the 1099-B. Exchanges such as Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood Crypto and Gemini file it with the IRS and send you a copy, listing every sale or exchange of a digital asset with the proceeds, the dates, and the cost basis when the broker has one. For the field-by-field version, see what Form 1099-DA is.

It has the same shape as a 1099-B: short-term and long-term sections, a "Total (N items)" line closing each one, and a totals summary page. Anything that reads a 1099-B can read most of a 1099-DA. The trouble is in the parts a 1099-B never prints, covered below, and in the cost basis column, which for 2025 sales is often blank or marked "unknown" because brokers were not yet required to report it. Our 1099-B vs 1099-DA comparison covers the phase-in.

The numbers on it still end up in the same place as stock trades: Form 8949 and Schedule D. Which is why a file your tax software can import, with each row in the right section, is the whole job.

Three Things a 1099-DA Has That a 1099-B Doesn't

A converter built only for stock forms files these wrong. This one was built on real 1099-DA statements and handles each of them on purpose.

An "Unknown Term" section

When the broker can't tell how long you held an asset, usually because it was transferred in from another wallet, the sale lands in its own section with no holding period and, usually, no basis. Filed as short-term with a blank basis, it turns the entire proceeds into a phantom gain.

What we do: the sale stays in the file, labelled Unknown term in CSV and Excel, and stays out of the TXF, since a TXF row can't be filed without a term. The preview tells you how many such rows there are, so you can set the term and basis from your records and report them under Box B or E.

A stablecoin and NFT aggregate table

Qualifying stablecoins (USDC, USDT) and specified NFTs are reported as one yearly line per asset: total units, total proceeds, number of transactions, no dates, no basis. It is not a sale row, and adding it to the short-term section inflates that section by the whole amount.

What we do: the line is kept and labelled Aggregate, never counted as a short- or long-term sale, and left out of the TXF and the Form 8949 sections.

Cost basis that is mostly missing

For 2025 sales, brokers only had to report proceeds. Some, like Kraken, print basis for the lots they tracked anyway; many leave it blank or say "unknown." Either way, the IRS copy shows proceeds with nothing against them.

What we do: whatever the form prints is what you get. A blank basis stays blank, never zero and never guessed, so you can fill it from your own records before filing.

Every section is checked against the form. The proceeds, basis and row count of each section are compared with the "Total" line the broker printed. A match shows in green. A mismatch names the section and the difference, before you pay, so a form that reads wrong never turns into a file you file.

How it works

From a PDF nobody can import to a file that just works

Your broker prints transactions for humans to read. Tax software wants columns. We read every line — including VARIOUS dates, wash sales and missing cost basis — and hand back the columns.

AI reads every line — about 30 seconds from upload to download.

Your tax documents

A 1099-B is not a file you hand over lightly

It carries your account numbers, every position you held, and what you made or lost on each one. Here is exactly what we do with it — and what we never do.

Your PDF is deleted, not stored

We pull the transactions out and delete the original file as soon as the conversion finishes. It is never archived, never backed up, and never sits on a server waiting for someone to find it.

We never ask for your brokerage login

Auto-import tools want your username and password. We only need the PDF your broker already sent you. Your credentials stay with you, and every upload and download travels over an encrypted connection.

Kept in the United States, then deleted

Our servers and database are located in the United States. Your extracted transactions stay available for 90 days so you can re-download them in any format, then are deleted automatically. You can delete a conversion yourself at any time.

Never used to train AI, never read by a person

Extraction is fully automated under commercial API terms that exclude your data from AI model training. No employee, contractor, or operator opens your 1099-B or reads your trades. We do not sell or share your financial data.

How to Get Your 1099-DA Into TurboTax

Two paths, depending on which TurboTax you use. Exchange-specific quirks are in our Coinbase, Kraken and Robinhood import guide.

  1. 1

Upload the 1099-DA PDF above and check the preview. Green means every section matched the totals on the form.

  2. 2

TurboTax Desktop: download the TXF, then File → Import → From Accounting Software → Other Financial Software (TXF file). The short- and long-term rows land on Form 8949 with their dates and basis.

  3. 3

TurboTax Online has no TXF import. Use the CSV or Excel to enter the summary totals per section, the same summary-totals method that works for a large 1099-B.

  4. 4

Enter any Unknown term rows by hand with the holding period and basis from your own records. They are listed in the CSV and Excel so nothing is forgotten.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this converter support Form 1099-DA?

Yes. A 1099-DA has the same shape as a 1099-B plus two sections a 1099-B never prints: an Unknown Term section and a stablecoin/NFT aggregate table. The converter reads all of them, keeps every row in the section it came from, and checks each section against the total printed on the form. It has been verified on real Kraken 1099-DA statements.

Why is the cost basis blank or "unknown" on my 1099-DA?

For 2025 sales, brokers only had to report proceeds; basis reporting starts with 2026 sales, and only for assets bought and held at the same broker. Some brokers, Kraken among them, print basis for the lots they tracked anyway. The converter keeps whatever the form says and never invents a basis. A blank stays blank so you can fill it from your own records.

What does "Unknown Term" mean, and what happens to those rows?

The broker could not determine whether you held the asset for more or less than a year, usually because it was transferred in from another wallet. Those sales are kept and labelled "Unknown term" in the CSV and Excel, and left out of the TXF, because a TXF row cannot be filed without a holding period. You decide the term and basis from your records and report them on Form 8949 under Box B or E.

Why does my USDC or USDT line look different from the other rows?

Qualifying stablecoins and specified NFTs are reported as one yearly aggregate per asset: total units, total proceeds, number of transactions, and no dates or basis. It is not a Form 8949 row. The converter labels it "Aggregate", keeps it out of the short- and long-term sections, and leaves it out of the TXF.

Can I import a 1099-DA into TurboTax?

TurboTax Desktop imports the TXF through File → Import → From Accounting Software, and the short- and long-term rows land on Form 8949. TurboTax Online has no TXF import; there, use the CSV or Excel to enter summary totals per section, or the exchange's direct connection where one exists.

I received both a 1099-B and a 1099-DA from the same broker. Do I upload both?

Yes, as two separate statements. Robinhood, for example, sends a 1099-B for stocks and a 1099-DA for crypto. Each form has its own totals and gets its own reconciliation. The five-statement pack covers both for $29.99.

Does the converter check the totals?

Yes. Each section's proceeds, cost basis and row count are compared with the "Total" line the broker printed. A match shows in green. A mismatch names the section and the difference before you pay, so a misread form never becomes a file you file.

What about wash sales on crypto?

The wash-sale rule does not apply to digital assets under current law, so most 1099-DAs print nothing in the wash-sale box. If yours does, the amount is carried into the TXF and CSV exactly as it is on a 1099-B.

Is the converter free?

Uploading and previewing the results, including the summary totals and the reconciliation, is free. Downloading the TXF, CSV or Excel is $8.99 for one statement or $29.99 for five. No subscription.

Which exchanges' 1099-DA PDFs work?

Any US broker-issued 1099-DA: Kraken, Coinbase, Robinhood Crypto, Gemini, Crypto.com, PayPal and others all follow the same IRS layout. The converter reads the PDF itself, text and page images, so a scanned copy works too. If a form does not reconcile, the preview says so before you pay.
