You log into Wells Fargo Online, click through to Statements & Documents, and find a 1099-INT for your checking account and nothing else. Your brokerage 1099 — the one with every trade on it — isn't there. Meanwhile a neighbor with a Wells Fargo account already has their consolidated 1099 in hand, and you're being told yours won't post for another two weeks.
Both of those are working as designed, and neither is obvious from inside the website. Wells Fargo splits tax documents across two separate portals depending on whether the account is a bank account or a brokerage account, and it releases consolidated 1099s in two waves depending on what you hold. This guide covers when each Wells Fargo tax document is released, which portal it lives in, and how to get the brokerage data into your tax software.

Wells Fargo Advisors publishes an unusually specific delivery calendar. These were the dates for the most recent filing season, and the pattern repeats year to year within a few days:
| Document | Posted online | Mailed by |
|---|---|---|
| Form 5498 (market value & RMD) | Early January | Mid-January |
| Form 1099-Q (529 distributions) | Early-to-mid January | Mid-January |
| Form 1099-R (retirement distributions) | Mid-January | Late January |
| Consolidated 1099 — Group 1 | Late January | Early February |
| Consolidated 1099 — Group 2 | Mid-February | Mid-to-late February |
| Form 1042-S | Early March | Early-to-mid March |
| Form 5498-ESA | Late April | Late April |
| Form 5498 (contributions) | Late May | Late May |
Documents post online first and are mailed a few days later. Allow 24 to 48 hours after the stated release date before concluding something is missing.
The consolidated 1099 is the one that matters for anyone who sold securities, and it's the one with the two-wave complication.
The Two Complications: Two Portals, Two Waves
Your brokerage 1099 is not on Wells Fargo Online
This is the single most common reason people think their form is missing.
Wells Fargo Online — the site you use for checking, savings, and credit cards — carries deposit account tax documents, principally the 1099-INT for interest paid on your bank accounts. Your brokerage forms are somewhere else. Wells Fargo says this plainly:
"You may not have access to all of your brokerage tax documents on Wells Fargo Online. Visit Wells Fargo Advisors for access to all of your brokerage tax documents."
Brokerage accounts — including WellsTrade self-directed accounts and Intuitive Investor robo accounts — are held through Wells Fargo Clearing Services, LLC (WFCS), a separate entity that also operates under the trade name First Clearing. WFCS issues the consolidated 1099, and WFCS's portal is where it lives.
So if you bank and invest at Wells Fargo, you will end up with tax documents in two places under two different logins. That's not a glitch.
Your consolidated 1099 lands in one of two waves
Wells Fargo sorts brokerage accounts into two delivery groups based on what you hold, not on when you ask:
- Group 1 — accounts holding straightforward securities. Individual stocks, most ETFs, plain bonds. These post in late January.
- Group 2 — accounts holding anything whose tax character isn't settled yet: mutual funds, REITs, foreign securities, unit investment trusts, and similar instruments. These wait for the issuers to finalize their reclassifications and post in mid-February, near the February 15 statutory deadline.
One REIT in an otherwise simple account moves the whole account to Group 2. If you hold several Wells Fargo accounts, some can land in each group — which is exactly how people end up filing on the strength of a January form while a second one is still pending.
A form may also arrive stamped as not final, meaning Wells Fargo expects updated information from at least one issuer. Treat that stamp as an instruction to wait.
Where to Find Your Wells Fargo Tax Documents
Brokerage documents (consolidated 1099, 1099-R, 1099-Q):
- Sign in at wellsfargoadvisors.com — or reach the Advisors site through the investing section of Wells Fargo Online
- Open Statements & Documents
- Select Tax Docs/1099s
- Choose the tax year and open the PDF
Bank documents (1099-INT on deposit accounts):
- Sign in at wellsfargo.com
- Open Statements & Documents
- Select Tax Documents
Note your account number and Document ID from the first page of the brokerage 1099. Any third-party import will ask for both.
What's on the Wells Fargo 1099
The consolidated 1099 is a single PDF bundling several IRS forms — the same structure other brokers call a 1099-Composite, explained in our 1099-Composite guide. Inside it:
- 1099-B — every securities disposition, with proceeds, cost basis, acquisition and sale dates, and wash sale adjustments. This section is what becomes Form 8949 and Schedule D.
- 1099-DIV — ordinary and qualified dividends, plus capital gain distributions
- 1099-INT — interest from brokerage holdings (separate from your bank 1099-INT)
- 1099-OID — original issue discount on bonds
- 1099-MISC — miscellaneous income including substitute payments
Two Wells Fargo–specific things to check.
Advisory and legacy accounts carry noncovered lots. Wells Fargo Advisors serves a lot of long-held, inherited, and transferred-in positions. Anything acquired before the covered-security rules took effect, or moved in from another firm without basis, shows up with a blank or unreported cost basis — and the IRS gets a copy showing full proceeds against no basis. You have to supply it. Our guide to noncovered securities with missing cost basis covers how to reconstruct and report it.
Reclassifications drive amendments. The same mutual fund and REIT holdings that push you into Group 2 are the ones most likely to trigger a corrected form later.
How to Import Wells Fargo Tax Documents
TurboTax. Wells Fargo appears in the broker list under more than one entry, and they are not interchangeable — the banking entry will not return your brokerage data. For a consolidated 1099 you need the Wells Fargo Advisors entry, authenticated with your Advisors Access Online username and password, which is a different credential from your online banking login. Import generally opens in early-to-mid February, after Group 1 has posted.
If the import returns nothing, errors out, or brings in a partial year, work through our dedicated fix: Wells Fargo WellsTrade 1099-B TurboTax import not working. The broader diagnostic sequence for any broker is in TurboTax 1099-B import not working.
TaxAct, H&R Block, FreeTaxUSA. These generally take a CSV upload or manual entry rather than a direct Wells Fargo connection.
For accounts with heavy trading volume, direct import gets unreliable well before the row count gets extreme — see handling a large 1099-B. Converting the PDF to a structured file and uploading that sidesteps the credential handshake entirely. Our CSV vs TXF vs Excel comparison covers which format each program accepts.
Late, Missing, or Corrected Forms
Nothing in Statements & Documents. Confirm you're in the Wells Fargo Advisors portal and not Wells Fargo Online. This resolves most cases.
The portal shows only a 1099-INT. Same cause — that's your deposit account form. The brokerage document is on the Advisors side.
It's February and still nothing. You're likely in Group 2. Check whether you hold mutual funds, REITs, or foreign securities; if so, mid-February is the expected date, not a delay.
Your form says "not final." Wells Fargo is waiting on issuer data. Filing from a not-final form is how you end up amending.
An amended 1099 arrives. Wells Fargo runs four separate amendment waves, from roughly the start of March through mid-April. If your account holds reclassification-prone securities, an early filing has a real chance of being superseded. Compare the amended form against the original: a change limited to dividend character may not move your tax at all, while a changed 1099-B figure means filing Form 1040-X. If you already imported and the correction wiped your entries, see corrected 1099-B import wiped out my data.
Wash sale adjustments look wrong. Disallowed losses must carry through to Form 8949 exactly as reported — see our wash sale explainer.
You closed the account. Document access generally survives closure for the year in which you traded. If you can't sign in, WFCS can retrieve the form.
FAQ
When does Wells Fargo release tax documents?
Retirement forms post in mid-January. Consolidated 1099s post in two waves: late January for straightforward holdings, mid-February for accounts holding mutual funds, REITs, or foreign securities.
Why isn't my 1099 on Wells Fargo Online?
Because it's a brokerage document. Wells Fargo Online carries deposit account forms; brokerage 1099s are on the Wells Fargo Advisors site under Statements & Documents, then Tax Docs/1099s.
What is Wells Fargo Clearing Services, LLC?
The entity that holds and clears Wells Fargo brokerage accounts, including WellsTrade and Intuitive Investor, and issues their tax forms. It also operates under the trade name First Clearing.
Which Wells Fargo entry do I pick in TurboTax?
The Wells Fargo Advisors entry, using your Advisors Access Online credentials. The banking entry won't return brokerage data.
Why did I get two Wells Fargo 1099s?
Most often because you hold more than one account and they landed in different delivery groups. It can also be a bank 1099-INT alongside a brokerage consolidated 1099 — different forms from different parts of the company.
Should I wait to file?
If your form is marked not final, or your account holds REITs, mutual funds, or foreign securities, waiting past the amendment waves is usually cheaper than amending later.
My 1099-B has no cost basis on some rows. Is that an error?
No. Those are noncovered securities — typically older, inherited, or transferred-in lots. Wells Fargo isn't required to report basis on them, but you still have to.
Does Wells Fargo report to the IRS?
Yes. Every 1099 Wells Fargo or WFCS sends you is also filed with the IRS, including the proceeds figures on rows with no basis reported.
Bottom Line
Wells Fargo's tax documents aren't unusual in content — the consolidated 1099 looks like everyone else's. What trips people up is delivery: bank forms and brokerage forms live in two different portals under two different logins, and the consolidated 1099 arrives in one of two waves depending on what's in the account.
Find the Wells Fargo Advisors portal, confirm which wave your account falls into, and check whether the form says final before you file. Then the only work left is getting a 1099-B full of noncovered lots and wash sale adjustments into your tax software intact.
