You filed your return in early February using the Vanguard 1099 that was sitting in your account. Three weeks later a second Vanguard tax form appears — not a correction, an entirely separate document covering funds the first one didn't include. Your return is now wrong, and you didn't do anything careless to get here.
Vanguard issues tax documents in more waves than almost any other firm, for reasons rooted in its fund lineup. That makes "is my Vanguard tax form final?" the most important question of the season, and the one Vanguard answers least visibly. This guide covers Vanguard's release schedule, where to find each form, and how to import without importing half your year.

| Document | Typical availability | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|
| 1099-R | Mid-to-late January | IRA and retirement distributions |
| 1099-Q | Late January | 529 plan distributions |
| 1099-DIV / 1099-B — first wave | Late January | Accounts holding only Vanguard equity index funds and ETFs |
| Later waves | Early to late February | Accounts holding balanced funds, bond funds, international funds, or REIT funds |
| Final wave | Mid-to-late February, occasionally March | Accounts with securities requiring reclassification |
| Corrected 1099s | March through April | Issuer reallocations |
| Form 5498 | Late May | IRA contributions — informational only |
The statutory deadline is February 15 for consolidated brokerage forms. Vanguard publishes a per-fund availability schedule each January, and it's the single most useful page on their site during tax season.
Why Vanguard Sends Multiple Waves
Most brokers assign each account to a wave. Vanguard's schedule is driven substantially by which funds you hold, and its customers typically hold several.
The mechanism is income reclassification. A bond fund, a REIT fund, or an international fund doesn't know the final tax character of its distributions until after year-end — how much is qualified dividend, how much is return of capital, how much is foreign-sourced income eligible for the foreign tax credit. Vanguard won't issue your 1099-DIV for that fund until the fund reports final numbers.
So a portfolio of VTI, VXUS, a bond fund, and a REIT fund can genuinely produce forms across three separate release dates. Each is complete and correct for what it covers, which is exactly why it's easy to mistake an early one for the whole picture.
The rule that keeps you out of trouble: don't file until Vanguard's tax form page shows every expected document as available for your account. Our guide to the Vanguard multi-wave 1099-B import problem covers how to verify you have all of them.
Where to Find Your Vanguard Tax Documents
On the website:
- Log in at investor.vanguard.com
- Open the My Accounts menu and choose Tax center — or Statements & tax forms
- Select the tax year
- Open or download each PDF
The tax center also shows the expected availability date for forms not yet issued, which is the field you actually want.
In the app: tap the profile or menu icon, then Statements & documents, then Tax forms.
Brokerage versus legacy mutual fund accounts. Vanguard spent years migrating clients from legacy mutual-fund-only accounts to a unified brokerage account. If you held both structures during a transition year, you may see separate document sets for each. Confirm you've viewed both.
What's on Your Vanguard Forms
- 1099-B — sales and redemptions, including mutual fund redemptions and ETF sales, with proceeds, basis, dates, and wash sale adjustments. This becomes your Form 8949 and Schedule D.
- 1099-DIV — dividends, qualified dividends, capital gain distributions, Section 199A dividends, and foreign tax paid
- 1099-INT — interest income
- 1099-OID — bond original issue discount
- 1099-MISC — miscellaneous income
The mutual fund basis question. Vanguard's default cost basis method for mutual fund shares is average cost, which is unusual in the brokerage world and materially different from the FIFO or specific-identification methods used for stocks. It affects your reported gain, and once you've used average cost on a fund you're generally locked into it for existing shares. Our guide to average cost vs FIFO on a mutual fund 1099-B covers what you can and can't change.
Reinvested dividends are purchases. Every automatically reinvested distribution buys shares at that day's price and creates a new tax lot with its own basis. Investors who forget this systematically overstate their gains — you already paid tax on those dividends as income. See our guide to DRIP and dividend reinvestment cost basis.
Noncovered shares. Mutual fund shares purchased before 2012 are noncovered, meaning Vanguard reports proceeds but not basis to the IRS. Long-time Vanguard investors hit this constantly — see noncovered securities with missing cost basis.
How to Import Vanguard Tax Documents
TurboTax. Search for Vanguard in the investment income section and authenticate with your Vanguard credentials.
Where import fails:
- Importing too early. The single biggest Vanguard-specific failure. The import pulls whatever is final at that moment, and later waves don't automatically appear. You have to re-import or enter the rest manually.
- Partial account coverage. Multiple account types under one login don't always all come through.
- Two-factor prompts stalling in the embedded browser.
- Volume, though Vanguard's buy-and-hold client base hits this less often than active-trading platforms. If you do, see handling a large 1099-B.
Verify after importing. Open the PDF and check total proceeds against what your tax software shows. A mismatch means a wave is missing.
H&R Block, TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA. Typically CSV upload or manual entry. See the TaxAct CSV format requirements and the H&R Block CSV guide.
Late, Missing, or Corrected Forms
A form you expected isn't there. Check the expected-availability date in the tax center. Bond, international, and REIT funds are routinely last.
You already filed and a new form arrived. If it's a genuinely new document rather than a correction, you've under-reported and need Form 1040-X. If it's a correction, compare it first — many change only dividend character.
No 1099-B. Vanguard doesn't issue one if you had no sales or redemptions. Reinvested dividends alone don't trigger it.
You moved funds between Vanguard accounts. In-kind transfers between your own accounts aren't sales, but exchanging one fund for another is — fund exchanges are a sale plus a purchase and appear on the 1099-B.
FAQ
When does Vanguard release tax documents?
Retirement forms in mid-to-late January; brokerage 1099s in waves from late January through mid-February, with some funds landing later. Vanguard publishes a per-fund schedule each January.
Why did Vanguard send me more than one tax form?
Because different funds finalize their income character at different times. Each form is complete for the funds it covers, and you need all of them before filing.
How do I know if my Vanguard 1099 is final?
Check the tax center for your account. Forms not yet issued show an expected availability date. If any are pending, yours isn't final.
Where do I find Vanguard tax forms?
Log in, open My Accounts, then Tax center or Statements & tax forms, and select the year.
Why is my Vanguard cost basis showing average cost?
Average cost is Vanguard's default method for mutual fund shares. It differs from the FIFO default used for stocks and is difficult to change retroactively for shares already sold under it.
Do reinvested dividends go on my 1099-B?
Not as sales — but they create new tax lots that raise your basis, and they show up on the 1099-DIV as income in the year received. When you eventually sell, that added basis matters.
Does Vanguard mail tax forms?
Only if you haven't opted into electronic delivery. Electronic posting is earlier.
Bottom Line
Vanguard's tax documents are accurate and unusually slow, and both facts trace to the same cause: a fund lineup heavy in the exact asset classes that reclassify income after year-end.
The discipline that matters is simple. Before you file, open the tax center and confirm every expected form for your account has actually been issued. Then check your imported totals against the PDFs. Vanguard's multi-wave schedule punishes early filers more than any other broker's.
Vanguard 1099-B split across multiple forms and won't reconcile? Try it on your 1099-B — upload each PDF and get clean, consistent CSV or TXF output with basis, dates, and adjustments intact, so you can combine every wave into one complete Form 8949.
