Merrill Lynch Tax Documents — When They Arrive, Where to Find Them, How to Import

You're in TurboTax, ready to import your Merrill 1099, and you type "Merrill" into the broker search. Nothing useful comes back — or worse, several entries come back and none of them accepts your credentials. Meanwhile your actual tax form is sitting in your Bank of America login under a name you didn't expect: "Tax Reporting Statement."

Merrill's tax documents are straightforward once you know the vocabulary and which of the Bank of America family of logins holds them. This guide covers when Merrill releases each form, where to find it, what the Tax Reporting Statement actually is, and how to work around the import entry that so often refuses to cooperate.

Document Typical availability Who gets it
1099-R Mid-to-late January IRA and retirement distributions
Tax Reporting Statement — first wave Late January to early February Simple accounts: equities, ETFs, cash
Later waves Mid-February to early March Accounts with mutual funds, REITs, UITs, or foreign securities
Equity award supplemental February RSU, ESPP, and option holders through Benefits OnLine
Corrected statements March through April Issuer reallocations
Schedule K-1 March onward Partnership and alternative investments
Form 5498 Late May IRA contributions — informational only

The consolidated statement deadline is February 15, and Merrill publishes its wave schedule each January. Merrill's mailing schedule is unusually well documented — worth checking your account's assigned date rather than refreshing daily.

Merrill Edge vs Merrill Lynch — Why It Matters

These are two service tiers of the same broker, and the distinction affects where you log in and which import entry works.

  • Merrill Edge — self-directed online brokerage, accessed through merrilledge.com or your Bank of America login.
  • Merrill Lynch Wealth Management — advisor-managed accounts, accessed through MyMerrill (mymerrill.com).
  • Benefits OnLine — employer equity plans and retirement plans Merrill administers, on a completely separate login at benefits.ml.com.

If you have an advisor and a self-directed account, you have documents in two places. If you also have employer equity, three.

Where to Find Your Merrill Tax Documents

Merrill Edge / Bank of America login:

  1. Log in at merrilledge.com or bankofamerica.com
  2. Navigate to your Merrill investment account
  3. Click Accounts, then Documents
  4. Select Tax Statements or Tax Documents
  5. Choose the tax year and open the PDF

MyMerrill (advisor accounts):

  1. Log in at mymerrill.com
  2. Go to Accounts, then Documents
  3. Select Tax Documents and the year

Benefits OnLine (equity awards):

  1. Log in at benefits.ml.com
  2. Open your stock plan account
  3. Look under Documents or Tax Information for the supplemental basis detail

Note the Document ID printed on the statement. Third-party imports require it along with your account number.

What the Tax Reporting Statement Is

Merrill doesn't use the phrase "consolidated 1099" prominently. Its document is called the Tax Reporting Statement, and it's the same thing — one PDF containing several IRS forms:

  • 1099-B — every sale with proceeds, cost basis, acquisition and disposition dates, and wash sale adjustments. This becomes your Form 8949 and Schedule D.
  • 1099-DIV — dividends and capital gain distributions
  • 1099-INT — interest income, with municipal interest broken out
  • 1099-OID — bond original issue discount
  • 1099-MISC — miscellaneous income

It follows the standard 1099 Composite structure used across the industry, just under a different name. Searching your account for "1099" may return nothing while the statement sits there under its own label — a real source of "my form is missing" reports.

Supplemental sections matter here. Merrill's statement includes extensive supplemental detail after the official forms: noncovered security transactions, accrued market discount detail, foreign tax paid, and Section 199A amounts. Merrill's client base holds a lot of fixed income, so the accrued market discount reporting in Box 1f is more relevant than at most brokers — see our guide to bonds and T-bills on your 1099-B.

The Equity Award Basis Problem

Merrill administers equity compensation plans for many large employers through Benefits OnLine, and the standard trap applies.

Your 1099-B reports RSU and ESPP sales with the cost basis brokers are required to report — which excludes the compensation income already taxed on your W-2. A same-day RSU sale that produced essentially no economic gain shows up as a large capital gain. Filing it as printed means paying tax twice.

The corrected basis lives in the Benefits OnLine supplemental, not on the brokerage statement. Report the broker's number on Form 8949 and correct it with adjustment code B. See wrong RSU cost basis and ESPP cost basis double-counted for the mechanics.

How to Import Merrill Tax Documents

TurboTax. This is where Merrill has a genuine reputation problem. The broker list may show Merrill Lynch, Merrill Edge, Merrill, or a Bank of America entry, and which one works depends on your account type and the tax year. Some years an entry people used successfully before simply stops appearing.

Try in this order:

  1. Merrill Lynch — works for both Edge and advisor accounts in most years
  2. Merrill Edge — if a distinct entry exists
  3. Bank of America — occasionally the working path for Edge accounts under a BofA login

You'll need your account number and Document ID from the statement, or your login credentials depending on the flow.

When no entry works at all, our guide to the missing Merrill Edge dropdown in TurboTax covers the workarounds, including the file-based path.

Other failure modes: importing before your wave finalizes, advisor accounts that only import through the MyMerrill path, and transaction volume — see handling a large 1099-B.

H&R Block, TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA. Generally CSV upload or manual entry. See the TaxAct CSV format requirements and the H&R Block CSV guide.

Late, Missing, or Corrected Forms

You searched for "1099" and found nothing. Look for Tax Reporting Statement instead.

Your wave hasn't come up yet. Check Merrill's published schedule and your account's date. Mutual fund and REIT holders wait longer.

A corrected statement arrives. Merrill flags the changed sections. Many corrections only reclassify dividend character and don't move your tax; a changed 1099-B figure requires Form 1040-X.

You have an advisor account and can't find documents on merrilledge.com. Advisor account documents are on MyMerrill.

Your employer changed equity plan administrators mid-year. You'll have partial-year records at Merrill and partial-year records at the new administrator, and transferred shares often arrive with basis missing — see noncovered securities with missing cost basis.

FAQ

When does Merrill Lynch release tax documents?

Retirement forms in mid-to-late January; the Tax Reporting Statement in waves from late January through mid-February, against a February 15 deadline. Merrill publishes wave dates annually.

What is the Merrill Tax Reporting Statement?

Merrill's name for the consolidated 1099 — a single PDF containing the 1099-B, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-OID, and 1099-MISC, plus supplemental detail.

Why can't I find Merrill in the TurboTax broker list?

The available entries change between tax years and account tiers. Try Merrill Lynch first, then Merrill Edge, then Bank of America. If none works, use the file-based import path.

Where do I find my Merrill Document ID?

On the first page of the Tax Reporting Statement, near the account number. Required for third-party imports.

Is Merrill Edge different from Merrill Lynch for taxes?

Same broker, same form structure. The difference is which portal you log into and occasionally which import entry works.

Where are my Merrill equity award documents?

Benefits OnLine at benefits.ml.com, separate from your brokerage login. That's where the adjusted cost basis for RSU and ESPP sales lives.

Does Merrill mail tax documents?

Yes, unless you've opted into paperless delivery. Electronic posting is several days ahead of the mail.

Bottom Line

Merrill's tax documents cause more trouble than they should for two avoidable reasons: the form is called a Tax Reporting Statement rather than a 1099, and the TurboTax import entry is unreliable year to year.

Know the document's real name, know which of the three Merrill logins holds your account, and have a file-based fallback ready for the import. Then the only remaining work is correcting equity award basis, which is manual at every broker.
